Pelvic floor muscle training
Vaginal and anal probes are specialized devices used in pelvic floor muscle training and incontinence treatment, particularly through biofeedback and electrical stimulation therapy. These probes are inserted into the vagina or anus and are designed to stimulate or measure the activity of the pelvic floor muscles.
Use & Application
1. Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT)
These probes help patients learn how to properly contract and relax their pelvic floor muscles. They are often used with biofeedback devices that show real-time feedback on a screen, guiding the patient.
2. Electrical Stimulation (e-stim)
The probes deliver mild electrical impulses to stimulate pelvic floor muscles, particularly when the person cannot voluntarily contract them well. This is common in patients with severe weakness, neurological issues, or post-childbirth injuries.
3. Incontinence Treatment
They are considered to be effective for:
- Stress urinary incontinence (SUI): leakage with exertion like coughing or sneezing.
- Urge urinary incontinence (UUI): sudden strong urge to urinate.
- Fecal incontinence: accidental leakage of stool or gas.
Anal probes are more commonly used for fecal incontinence or when vaginal insertion is not possible (e.g., after surgery or in male patients).
Advantages
High Effectiveness (especially when combined with therapy)
- Studies show significant improvement in incontinence symptoms with consistent use.
- Biofeedback improves awareness and technique during PFMT.
- Electrical stimulation enhances muscle strength and responsiveness.
Non-Surgical
- Offers a conservative management option before considering surgery.
Objective Feedback
- Helps both patients and therapists measure progress.
Tailored for All Genders
- Vaginal probes for those with female anatomy.
- Anal probes usable for both sexes, including men with post-prostatectomy incontinence.
Warnings & Considerations
Contraindications
- Pregnancy (for electrical stimulation)
- Active pelvic infection (e.g., yeast infections, UTIs)
- Recent surgery or injury in the pelvic area
- Pacemakers or implanted electrical devices (check with a healthcare provider)
Proper Use is Essential
- Incorrect insertion or intensity settings can cause discomfort or pain.
- Hygiene is crucial: probes must be cleaned thoroughly after each use.
- Use only under the supervision or recommendation of a pelvic floor physical therapist or medical professional.
Time & Commitment
- Requires consistent use (often daily or several times a week for months).
- Benefits may take weeks to become noticeable.
